Course summary:

This is the first step on the paddlesport coaching ladder. We run this four-day training and assessment course over two weekends or four days intensive. The programme is designed to develop your ability to plan. deliver and review safe, ethical, effective, paddling sessions.

Over the four days you will develop ‘how to coach’ skills alongside gaining a technical understanding of ‘what to coach’ novices in canoes and kayaks.

The course will provide training in:

Preparing coaching activities

Establishing a safe working environment

How to prepare participants for coaching activities

How to deliver prepared sessions

Evaluating the effectiveness of personal coaching practice

How to manage effective and appropriate rescues

The staff working on our Level 1 Coach Award are mainly level 5 coaches as we acknowledge the very crucial role that Level 1 Coaches play in introducing people to paddlesport and recognise the importance that they receive the best of support, guidance and training from the very start. On the course you will also be introduced to a range of games and activities used to reinforce you’re coaching. Of course having access to our experienced staff means that you glean from them any number of ‘hot tips and handy hints’ for your next coaching session on the water.

Who is the course for?

The Level 1 Coach is predominately an assistant coach, this training is aimed at those who are keen to introduce ‘first timers’ to canoeing and kayaking. The course is designed to be as accessible to as wide a range of individuals as possible for example:

A non paddling parent of a child in a club

A paddler / non paddler who would like to help coach in their local club

Someone wishing to work in the outdoors

Participants are encouraged to bring all personal equipment including safety equipment so they get the opportunity to be coached using the equipment they are most familiar with.
