The course will be based at the Tollymore National Outdoor Centre and utilises many challenging areas of the Mournes.
The course will include:
Planning a night journey
The right equipment in the right place (head torch, compass, etc)
Timing and pacing
Fine detail navigation, including subtle contour features and relocation techniques
Poor visibility / night navigation in the mountain environment
Who is the course for?
Those with some previous hill walking experience and map reading skills who want to move it up a notch and fine tune all aspects of their skills especially in darkness or very poor visibility.
Practising your navigation at night is an excellent means of refining your navigational skills and giving yourself the confidence to navigate in many testing conditions.
Bring any of your own personal hill waking outdoor clothing and kit. Such as, waterproof jacket and trousers, boots, fleece jacket, hat and gloves, flask, water bottle, Mourne map (1:25,000), and spare clothes.
Tollymore can supply most of the equipment you require for this course but it is preferable to use your own were possible even if it’s just a chance for your instructor to comment on your kit and give advice.
