Course pre-requisites:
Reasonable level of fitness and an interest in learning about becoming more independent in the mountain environments.
Course summary:
The course will be based at the Tollymore National Outdoor Centre and each day will be spent in the Mournes. The main emphasis of the course will be a sound introduction to many of the basic skills and knowledge allowing you to operate more safely in the mountains. You will discuss many aspects and practice many skills on the hill, such as:
Weather
Equipment
Risk awareness
Route choice / map reading
Poor visibility / night navigation
Planning for and dealing with hazards and emergencies
Who is the course for?
This course is perfect for the absolute beginner or perhaps those with some previous experience who have relied on their friends to make all the decisions.
It’s a lot more fun when you know where you’re going!
Bring any of your own personal hill walking outdoor clothing and kit. Such as, waterproof jacket and trousers, boots, fleece jacket, hat and gloves, flask, water bottle, mourne map (1:25,000), and spare clothes.
Tollymore can supply most of the equipment you require for this course but it is preferable to use your own were possible even if it’s just a chance for your instructor to comment on your kit and give advice.
