About the Event

Discover the breathtaking activity of Hill Walking in the tranquil Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland on our 1 day beginners learn Hill Walking - Personal Skills course.

With the aid of our skilled and passionate instructors you'll not only enjoy guided walks of the local area but also develop all the basics required to continue enjoying the activity in complete confidence.

Definitely! Ideal for either complete beginners or those who have tried Hill Walking before to include individuals, group or clubs wishing to move to the next level.

Where is the course located?

Located at our Adventure Centre in the fishing village of Annalong on the Mourne Coastline at the edge of the stunning Mourne Mountains and Mourne Coastal plain, the Centre is perfectly situated for all levels of Hill Walking all year round.

What will I learn on the course?

The basics of planning and preparation for your journey to include route choice, fitness and equipment choice.

The basics of Hill Walking skills and techniques.

To enjoy the natural environment responsibly using the principles of 'Leave No Trace'.

Other areas that may be touched on during the course as necessary include;

The basics of Mountain navigation to include map interpretation and compass techniques.

The basics of Mountain safety to include hazard awareness, avoidance and emergency procedures.

What is the course format?

Basic theory shall be covered in the morning in our centre while other elements shall be introduced throughout the day with emphasis on the practical application of the theory while out and about walking.

What is included in the course cost?

1 day of instruction/guiding with a professional Mountain instructor

All specialist equipment

All in course transport (Pre and post course shuttles to and from our centre are available upon request)

All in course accommodation (Pre and post course accommodation available upon request)

What are the course pre-requisites?

Suitable for complete beginners or those who want to improve existing beginners skills or those wishing to refresh established skills

Minimum age 12

What is the course schedule?

Daily courses begin at 9.30 am and finish at 4.30 pm.

When does the course run?

Courses run regularly all year round - check calendar for availability - or upon request for group/club bookings (6 or more)

Please note that on our open courses we have no minimum requirement to run - if you book it we will run it!

What does the centre offer?

This Centre has been offering a variety of Mountain courses since 1996. With highly qualified staff the Centre is has a wealth of experience teaching beginners to seasoned pros.

Located beside an historic harbour in the traditional fishing village of Annalong, on the edge of the Mourne Mountains and stunning Mourne Coastal Plain, a perfect spot for learning to Hill Walk.

What can I do in my free time?

Enjoy the hospitality of the traditional fishing village of Annalong with Harbour Inn and Restaurants.

Enjoy the sites, sounds and attractions of the nearby seaside resort of Newcastle with stunning promenade and range of hospitality (Shuttles are available to and from Newcastle and other local towns and attractions upon request).

If you find yourself hooked on walking, you can enjoy a range of coastal walks or explore the Mourne Coastal Plain in your free time or if you would like a change try them on Mountain Bike (Available for hire).

What about local weather conditions?

Due to the flexibility of the course and the versatility of the region, weather rarely impinges upon the course, and remember there's no such thing as poor weather just poor clothing!
