Top Tips for Family Fun on Strangford Lough

An area of outstanding beauty and wildlife importance the 15 mile sea lough has a lot to offer.  After witnessing its serene waters and ruggedly beautiful islands it is easy to see how it got its Irish name Loch Cuan meaning ‘calm lough’.  Don’t be fooled by the name however as there is plenty of fun and adventure to keep the family entertained on and around one of Northern Ireland’s most picturesque spots.

There is much to explore on StranStrangford Sea Safarigford Lough and the Strangford Sea Safari is a fun and exhilarating way to experience it.  As you skim across the surface of the lough in a purpose built RIB (rigid inflatable boat to you and I) the shipwrecks, whirlpools and seal colonies will keep everyone fascinated.   With trips suitable for all ages from 3 and up this is the perfect outing for all the family – both young and young at heart.  Check out our blog for a first hand account.

Castle Ward trails

 

For something more leisurely but still within the beautiful surroundings of Castle Ward try the estates multi purpose trails.  Accessible on horseback, bike or foot these trails promise to never be dull.  Whether you are looking for a leisurely stroll with the kids or a race on the bikes the Castle Ward trails have it all.  Bike hire including kids bikes and toddler trailers are available making this a hassle free and fun activity everyone can enjoy.  Check out this video to see the trails in action.

Further north along the Lough shore in the tranquil surroundings of Delamont Country Park, Killyleagh lies Action Outdoors.  With a variety of events happening throughout the year you won’t have a problem keeping the kids amused – especially when there is grass sledging involved!  For something more adventurous pack a picnic and hire a canoe for some fun floating on the Lough.   

Family Canoeing

If canoeing is what you are after then continue the fun on the Strangford Lough Canoe Trail.  Explore the Lough together in a safe environment on a guided trip.  Or for the more experienced canoeist download a map and make your own adventure.  Situated along the trail the Salt Island bothy is the perfect excuse to take the kids on that camping trip you’ve always promised.  Canoe hire is available making it easy to find a craft that suits you and your families needs.
