Jet Skis or Personal Watercraft (PWC) have become incredibly popular in Northern Ireland over the past decade. The diverse range of coastline, Loughs and rivers provide numerous venues for Jet Ski fun. The ease of transport via a small trailer means no where is more than two hours away. Jet Skis are even powerful enough to use as tow boats for waterskiing.

Jet Skis are mainly privately owned as a previously thriving hire industry has been hindered by increasing insurance costs. In fact all the hire providers in Northern Ireland have ceased trading in the last five years.

However not all in lost, there is still a thriving Jet Ski community with many clubs and providers offering advice.
There are a number of Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Recognised Teaching Establishments offering Personal Watercraft courses.

The lack of venues for Jet Ski hire means it is now difficult to try out the sport before purchasing a PWC. The best way to start is to either join a local club or speak to a Jet Ski supplier for advice as to which Jet Ski is most suitable for your needs. Contact the RYA Northern Ireland to find out your local Recognised Teaching Establishment offering PWC courses, although for the majority of these you will require your own PWC.

Different designs of Jet Skis will suit different people; a Jet Ski supplier will be able to advise you on the necessary horsepower required, seats needed, etc. Lessons are strongly advisable, contact RYA Northern Ireland to find your local PWC Recognised Teaching Establishment. A basic level of fitness and the ability to swim are a necessity.

An entry level Jet Ski including trailer will cost from £7500 - £9000. Additional costs will be a wet suit, buoyancy aid and a helmet which can be bought quite cheaply.

Additional costs such as insurance, boat storage, maintenance and repairs should also be considered. Make sure your car is able to tow a Jet Ski.
