With a strong and successful history in the equine sector, and a respected reputation and expertise, Northern Ireland continues to develop as an equestrian destination, attracting excellence in breeding, training and riding. A recent survey showed over 35,600 horses and ponies reside in Northern Ireland! We have people competing in all the equestrian disciplines including dressage, show jumping, eventing and long distance riding.
Northern Ireland also has 33 riding clubs and 11 branches of the Pony Club. The British Horse Society has approved 25 riding schools where the welfare of horses and ponies is their main aim. They are insured against public liability, and British Horse Society inspectors conduct unannounced yearly inspections to ensure that standards are always kept high. | How To Get StartedFind a BHS Approved riding centre by checking bhsireland.co.uk. Explain what level you are at, or if you are a complete novice tell them you want to learn to ride. The centre will advise you on which lessons to book. | Is It Easy? You must be at least 6 years old and being physically fit will help, but you will be using some muscles you don’t normally use and will probably feel a little stiff after the first few lessons as your fitness increases. | Is It Expensive? It is not hugely expensive to start riding. The centre will provide you with a riding helmet, however it is best to wear flat smooth soled footwear with a small raised heal. |
